Autumn 2012 Service-Learning
Course Schedule
A list of service-learning courses for the current quarter can be viewed below. The Carlson Center is your resource for selecting a service-learning position, but you can also talk to the professor for your course to learn more about the role of service-learning in a specific class.
To learn more about service-learning in general, check out the Students section of this website or contact us at 206.543.4282 or serve@uw.edu if you have additional questions.
Browsing Service-Learning Positions
• During the first few days of the quarter (sometimes a few days before the quarter starts), students registered for one of the courses below can read about service-learning position options online. BEGIN BROWSING positions for your course.
• Carlson Center staff will make a presentation in each class about service-learning logistics during the first days of the quarter. This is a great time to ask questions about service-learning in general or inquire about specific positions/organizations.
Tips for Browsing and Service-Learning Logistics
• Students engaged in service-learning will spend 20 to 40 hours (3 to 5 hours per week) working with one community partner organization over the course of the quarter.
• When browsing service-learning position options, choose options that are interesting to you and fit with your course/work schedule. Learn about each organization by checking out the organization’s website.
• As you consider your service-learning options, remember to factor in travel time to organizations (and how that might impact your availability for the shift they have listed). For tips on travel by bus, we recommend taking a look at www.metro.kingcounty.gov or Google Maps.
• Please do not call the service-learning organization until you have registered for a position. Organizations prefer to have the Carlson Center answer any questions about specific positions during the browsing period; this helps partner organizations manage the flow of their work—and usually gets you an answer to your question in a more timely manner.
Registering for a Service-Learning Position
• ONLINE REGISTRATION FOR SERVICE-LEARNING POSITIONS Your service-learning registration opening date and time is different depending on what course you are registered for; please see the list below for the registration opening times for your course.
• Service-learning positions are first come, first served. If a position is filled, you must choose another open position.
• Attend a Pre-Service Workshop through the Carlson Center to set the stage for a great service-learning experience (this is optional, but recommended). These workshops are held during the second week of the quarter; dates and times for can be found here.
• After registration, you can log back in to the service-learning database at any time to find details about your service-learning position.
*Are you already an active volunteer in an organization whose mission and work meets the learning goals and objectives for your course? Complete the Service-Learning Self Placement form and ask your professor to email it to serve@uw.edu with their approval.
Below is a list of classes that will be offered during Autumn 2012. As additional courses are confirmed, they will be added to this list.
